What is Rolfing

Rolfing® Structural Integration is a specialised, scientifically proven technique of bodywork that:

  • increases athletic performance
  • increases flexibility
  • improves alignment and posture
  • improves balance, co-ordination and mobility
  • enhances performance and self image
  • teaches good movement habits
  • can relieve chronic joint and muscle pain
  • improves range of movement
  • increases general vitality

by progressively manipulating the fascia (connective tissue).

Connective tissue is a very tough, strong, and fibrous tissue in the body. It forms a body stocking that binds all the parts of the body together. Its elasticity, plasticity, and resiliency is the reason for the actual change of shape of the body when it is moved e.g. a shoulder drops, or a spine straightens.

Human bodies are shaped by gravity, physical structure, past injury or illness, and our daily habits. Over time, we develop distinctive postures and muscle patterns, favourable or not. Any imbalance affects how our bodies stand in gravity. It is the task of the Rolfing practitioner to endeavour to correct these imbalances, release old patterns, and re-educate the body.

Powerful and liberating changes can occur where perhaps surgery was seen as the only hope!
